How to Make the Most of Your Goal Process

Nov 11th, 2011 Debra Hollinrake

In thinking about your goal process: How do you define your journey? How do you define your destination? When you accomplish a goal and it's 100% complete, how do you feel? What do you think about?

Once the journey has come to an end and you've accomplished your goal, hopefully you allow yourself to bask in the joy of the finished product. But then your "self," your consciousness, requires another goal in order for you grow and experience further enjoyment. That's a fact!

"Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity, but by doing it." ~Dr. Mark Hillman

Imagine your goal was to own a 4 bedroom house on the bay and now you have it. Now what? It feels good to have it and you're enjoying the wonderful feeling of living there and all the beauty that surrounds you. And now you get to take new action that involves your new home. But guess what, your new actions are the steps toward your next goals.

Or imagine your goal was to spend more quality time with your family and now you have that time. And now you are taking new actions that involve spending time with your family, and that take you toward new goals.

Your accomplished goal is actually a fleeting moment. Our life purpose is to enjoy ourselves. It is to feel, learn, develop, grow, give, socialize, contribute, love, and do. So it makes perfect sense that the journey is where our focus should always be because that is where we always are - on the journey! Our destination is simply a springboard to the next journey.

So how do you enjoy your journey?

The best way is to be aware. Imagine that you have tiny antennas all over your body, inside and out, and whatever you think and whatever you do stimulates those antennas. In turn, the now-stimulated antennas send sensations to your brain. Then your brain feeds back to you the message that you feel good. Then all those antennas shimmer with joy. An on it goes.

Be aware of each moment - picking something up from the floor, feeling the movement of your body, the air against your skin as you accomplish that seemingly simple task. Or biting into an apple. Instead of thinking about your work, or the next thing you have to do when you bite into the apple, you are right there with the apple. You hear the snap as you bite through the skin and then the soft crunch as your teeth sink into the fruit. Your saliva glands immediately release and your whole body experiences that sumptuous single bite.

That is how you enjoy the journey. Pay attention to everything you do. The future will still be there without you thinking about it now. You already know what you have to do, and you will do it. But now, just enjoy..."now". Appreciate "now". There is always something to appreciate about any given moment, even if it is that you want to experience something different. If so, do something about it. You have the power.

If you focus on the joy of each moment of your journey, more joy will stream into your life. Try this affirmation:

"I am totally aware of each moment of my life. I am filled with wonder as I feel my presence and it feels good."

Here's to joy brimming over in your life as you enjoy your journey, and your spirit glows.
